Hello Indie Game Fan!
Something adjacent to games has been on my mind this week so do excuse the slight tangent, but if you've been around social media this week, I'm pretty sure you would have come across OpenAI's new image generation capabilities, in particular, turning any photo into one with a "Studio Ghibli-like" art style, which has really thrown me for a loop.
On one hand, the less chronically online people are having fun with it, maybe thinking that it is some sort of image filter equivalent like on Instagram, or the thought never even crossed their mind about HOW it is being generated.
Then of course, we have artists (and by extension, game developers) who abhor the notion of AI generated anything, noting, rightfully so, about the myriad of copyright issues and the sources of training data.
I'm pretty sure Studio Ghibli did not see a single cent of any AI generated images in the "Studio Ghibli style", so I cannot imagine what it would be like to see your life's work so easily copied like this.
In fact, some of likened it to the "death of art", since there's no incentive to create any unique style any more, if it can that that easily replicated (financial incentives will not be there), so this is about as far as we are going to get culturally.
Then again, the genie is out of the bottle and there is no turning back, so the sentiment I have seen is Adapt or Die.
Please share your thoughts on this with me (reply direct to this email) since I want to read more perspectives to get a better feel for this situation.

Best Indie Games Newsletter By Clement • 27 April 2025 Hello Indie Game Fan Reader! This week saw the shadow drop of the long rumored Oblivion Remaster, which has absolutely taken over the conversation this week (to the detriment of some indie games) and seems like it is doing justice to the game, but unfortunately might explain exactly why we are getting so many remakes and remasters instead of new titles. Meanwhile, a turn based JRPG from a 30ish person French team is now the best rated...

Managed to get 3 videos up on the channel, despite having a busy week in terms of personal life commitments, so I'll take the small wins where I can get them! Best Indie Games Summer Showcase...
Best Indie Games Newsletter By Clement • 13 April 2025 Hello Indie Game Fan! Relative to last week's Switch 2 Direct, it was a relatively muted week with nothing too crazy happening, with Blue Prince and Crashlands 2 really standing out for new releases, along with the Triple-i showcase and the regular news. My output has not been there as of late, I too have my struggles with sitting down to get work done, so if you are as well, you're not alone! Maybe next week will be better Best Indie...
